Legal Aid launches new law graduate program to ‘supercharge careers’

11 February 2025

We are launching a new graduate program to attract aspiring criminal lawyers to regional areas in what’s been described as a “once in a lifetime” career opportunity.

The Criminal Law Regional Graduate Program offers participants a 2.5 year full-time employment contract on an annual salary of $95,000 to $100,000.

For the first six months, participants will build their foundational legal skills by working with various teams in our Sydney offices before moving to one of our regional offices for 12 months. At the conclusion of that 12-month period, they can continue in a regional location or elect to work in one of our Sydney metropolitan offices.

Regional areas available include Broken Hill, Dubbo, Moree, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga. Relocation benefits will be offered including three weeks' accommodation and a travel allowance.

Our Criminal Law Associate Director Steven Wright worked for Legal Aid NSW in Dubbo and Broken Hill, and that helped him to rapidly climb the career ladder to his current position.

“Moving to a regional area not only accelerated my career by giving me a diverse range of work but also provided opportunities to learn from some of the most experienced and dedicated lawyers in the country,” he said.

Mr Wright has been living in Broken Hill for more than four years and loves the lifestyle it offers him and his partner.

He said the new program is a “once in a lifetime opportunity for young aspiring lawyers to supercharge their career.” Applications are now open for the program and are due to close on April 20, 2025. Apply online through the I work for NSW website.

Applicants must:

  • be admitted as a legal practitioner by June 2025 or earlier
  • have less than 12 months of post-admission experience (Post-Qualified Experience)
  • have a driver’s licence and the ability to travel
  • be committed to developing expertise in criminal law.
