Learn how Legal Aid can help you this Law Week

Learn how Legal Aid NSW can help you with everything from trouble paying fines to housing issues and disasters, and understand more about people working in the law in a series of free webinars this Law Week.

Legal Aid NSW is delivering a series of free webinars from 20–26 May with a focus on people in the law. For some, the legal system can be intimidating but this Law Week will give people an opportunity to hear from people in the law to dispel some mysteries and make it easier to get help.

Legal Aid NSW's Natalie Neumann said Legal Aid NSW can help with legal issues beyond crime, like trouble paying bills, being a victim of disaster or domestic violence and much more.

“A fair and just society needs both a justice system so people can seek a remedy when something goes wrong, and equitable access to that system,” she said.

“I often hear people say, ‘I don't need Legal Aid, I'm not in trouble with the police’, but Legal Aid NSW is a lot more than that and can help with legal issues arising from housing, trouble paying bills, disaster and more.

“In our webinars we will give people an opportunity to meet lawyers working in the family, civil and crime divisions at Legal Aid and LawAccess NSW to learn more about the work they do, meet a magistrate and barrister and learn how the Ombudsman services can help you.”

Attorney-General The Hon Michael Daley said Law Week was about celebrating the role of the legal profession in supporting a just, safe and equitable society.

“Law Week reminds us that the legal profession is the cornerstone of justice and Legal Aid plays an essential role in maintaining the rule of law by ensuring everyone has a fair go in the legal system,” he said.

Legal Aid NSW CEO Monique Hitter said understanding the legal system helps people defend their rights.

“Knowing how the law works makes it easier for people to get help when they need it,” she said.

The webinars can be attended either online from your device, or in-person with live streams available at select libraries. The sessions are Auslan interpreted. Visit the Law Week NSW website for full details of events in 2024.
