Trauma-informed legal assistance

With You is a training program for trauma-informed, rights-based legal services to people experiencing distress, poor mental health and/or suicidality. The project is funded by the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department and led by Legal Aid NSW, on behalf of National Legal Aid. With You training has been developed through a review of domestic and international literature; analysis of existing best practice in the legal assistance sector; and national consultations with 534 people across Australia.

Practical eLearning is available with fully funded places to all staff and panel lawyers at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services, Community Legal Centres, Family Violence Prevention Legal Services, and Legal Aid Commissions. The eLearning consists of two core courses on understanding mental health and responding to clients in distress. Further courses are available from a course library in Working Effectively with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Peoples & Communities, Leading Trauma-Informed Teams and Legal Capacity and Decision-Making specific to Civil, Family, or Crime practice areas.

If this particular educational activity extends your knowledge and skills in areas that are relevant to your practice needs or professional development, then you should claim three (3) “units” for completing both core courses and one (1) additional unit for each further course. Please refer to the Legal Profession Uniform Continuing Professional Development (Solicitors) Rules 2015 to understand the relevant cap on units claimed for this activity.
