Annual Report 2023–24

Providing a legal safety net for people across NSW

In 2023–24, we supported the people of NSW by:

  • delivering 561,000 services (up nearly 10% on the previous year)
  • providing grants of legal aid in 50,000 matters (including family law, criminal and civil law disputes)
  • supporting almost 8,000 clients through our Domestic Violence Unit, and
  • managing a record 3,300 mediations (up 20%) through our Family Dispute Resolution service that helps separating couples reach agreement.

We also provided:

  • 1,412 legal services to 767 people in 56 local government areas who had been impacted by disasters such as floods and bushfires
  • 941 advice services to clients of our Respect at Work Legal Service who had experienced workplace sexual harassment or discrimination, and
  • 648 legal services following 900 referrals under the Legal Assistance for Families: Partnership Agreement that aims to reduce the over-representation of Aboriginal children in out-of-home care.

An independent survey of our clients showed 86% would recommend Legal Aid NSW to others, and more people are contacting us for help. Our LawAccess phone service, that provides free legal information and assistance, answered more than 162,000 calls from the public (25% higher than the previous year).

To further enhance our communication, we launched our new client portal – a secure, accessibility-tested online platform where clients with a grant of legal aid can access their case information.
