Disaster Response Legal Service solicitor receives award

Disaster Response Legal Service solicitor Alex Rumore has been awarded the Anthea Kerr Award at the 2023 Premier’s Awards.

On 14 November 2023, Alex Rumore, Senior Outreach Solicitor, Legal Aid NSW Disaster Response Legal Service (DRLS), was awarded the Anthea Kerr Award at the 2023 Premier’s Awards.

This award recognises public sector leaders who exhibit a deep commitment to public service values. It is awarded in honour of Anthea Kerr who passed away suddenly at 38 when she was Assistant Director General at the Department of Finance and Services after a 16 year career in the NSW public sector.

As a senior outreach lawyer with the DRLS, Ms Rumore has spent the last three years working with displaced communities across NSW devasted by bushfires and floods.

She can be on the road for months at a time, travelling thousands of kilometres to deliver empathic legal help wherever needed.

She works alongside other government agencies like the SES and Service NSW to help clients rebuild their lives, and has helped many achieve life-restoring results.

Legal Aid NSW CEO Monique Hitter applauded Ms Rumore for her commitment to social justice.

“We know early access to legal advice for people hurt by disaster is critical to prevent flow-on harms like homelessness or ill-health,” she said.

“By working on the frontline delivering legal advice and support to devastated communities, Ms Rumore has demonstrated her enduring commitment to public sector values.”

We congratulate Alex on this recognition of her work.
